'Liquid Nation Ball V' 2008

'Giving is the key to a full life. Reaching to the less fortunate, gives real meaning to our time in this world. Hosting Liquid Nation is a pleasure and an honor...
It is the surfing world's way of helping build a better world.'

- Fernando Aguerre, Co-Host of Liquid Nation Balls 1- 5

On September 5th, 2008, Liquid Nation Ball V was once again hosted by Vicky Mussio-Aguerre and Fernando Aguerre at their breathtaking oceanfront home in La Jolla. And it was 3 floors of fun open to the supporting patrons that poured in. Seemless fun thanks to the incredible organization of SIMA, that's the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association.

SIMA Humanitarian of the Year Dr. Dave Jenkins had this to say. "This year’s Liquid Nation Ball continues to be one of our most important fundraisers with the emphasis on the fun aspect. It's a unique celebration for a unique group of non profits.

In the words of our Chairman Dr Steve Hathaway “Surfaid is a upstart, young brash, full of hopes and dreams. Biting off more than we can chew again and again but not letting temporary setbacks blunt our passion-and learning and contributing much along the way.

The support of the surf industry continues to fuel our projects in the Mentawai and we have successfully leveraged their donations raising 5 $ from AusAID and NZAID and other institutions for every 1$ donated by the industry. This ongoing support has helped us expand the scope of our work into water and sanitation and other critical aspects of health.  We are forever grateful for the industry support and partnership."

Santi Aguerre with Dr. Dave Jenkins and Fernando Aguerre

And this wasn't just any ordinary surf related party. It was $300 a person and well worth it. Guests got to view Fernando's incredible one of a kind collection of surfboards from The Duke's personal collection on, dine on fabulous catered South American cuisine, drink exotic cocktails, and bid big on live auction items.

And I mean big. A surf adventure to Nicaragua went for $18,000, a surfboard shaped by Greg and Jed Noll went for a whopping $40,000, a silent auction sponsored by Riviera Magazine had such goodies as a Charriol USA Diamond Necklace and a fancy BALLY travel bag, and then back to the surf auction, a Skip Frye surfboard signed by the who's who of LNB V guests went for $20,000.

And the surfing who's who there in' liquid tribe force' were Bob McKnight, Quiksilver's CEO Bob McKnight, Derek O'Neill and Paul Naude of Billabong USA, surf star Lisa Andersen, surf star and man with the 'hair' Rob Machado, World Surf Champ Kelly Slater, surf star Taj Burrow, surf star Rochelle Ballard, inspirational surfer Jesse Billauer, and legendary surfboard shaper and former big, big wave rider Greg Noll.

Also there were Lisa and Murray Palmer, Gustavo Lanatta, Camille Sobrian and David Saltman, 1982 World Surf Champ Debbie Melville Beacham, and Cecilia and Santiago Aguerre.

Santiago or Santi as he is called by his friends, is the founder of the Liquid Nation Ball. Santi describes the event's inspirational beginnings."LN was created as a fundraiser to help Surf Aid with the Malaria control and community development  programs in the Mentawai Islands off Sumatra, Indonesia. It later was donated to the newly formed SIMA (Surf Industry Manufacturers Association) to become the official event for the organization. And by this way the recipient base was increased to be more inclusive and help another 12 Humanitarian organizations.

Unlike 10 or 15 years ago, today you would not even think of buying a product from a company that does not care about  harming the environment while its products are manufactured.  These will be a key issues affecting your buying desicion. You would not buy from a company that does not recycle, or a company that does not try to save natural resources.  In another 10 years, the general consumer will feel the same about the humanitarian issues of a company before he buys its products.

Are you big a Corporation looking to make sure everybody at your factory is doing well? Are you having good programs for the families of the people that work for you 10,000 miles away? Are you helping and donating to Humanitarian causes in the areas that you operate?  Can I trust you? If the answer is yes, I will give you my money, if not, I will move on to a brand that stands for what we stand. The next generation will be very aware of this, as today ours is about he environment."

And with that in mind, hundreds of Liquid Nation supporters gave over $230,000 this year to support such causes as the following.

*Keep A Breast - Raises funds for breast cancer education, awareness, prevention and treatment through art events. - keep-a-breast.org

*The Sumba Foundation - Improving the lives of the indigenous people of Sumba by improving health and education. - www.sumbafoundation.org

*Surfers Healing - Exposing children with autism to the unique experience of surfing. - www.surfershealing.org

*Stoked Mentoring - Mentoring by placing “at-risk” youth with successful professional adults. - www.stokedmentoring.org

*L.A. Surf Bus which charters buses to bring children from age 5-17 to the beach from L.A. and Orange County areas to learn about water safety and sports. - www.lasurfbus.org

And the Ka Keikio Hawaii Foundation, AccesSurf and Project Wipeout.

The evening continued into the night with dancing to a DJ over the Aguerre's covered indoor pool.

Fyi, Fernando Aguerre once again auctioned the trousers and jacket he was wearing and this time netted LN $ 9,5000!!!..... Anything to give back to a good cause, it's the Aguerre way!

The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) is the official working trade association of more than 300 surf industry suppliers. Founded in 1989, SIMA is a non-profit organization that serves to promote awareness of the surf industry and participation in the sport of surfing through public relations efforts and a variety of services, educational programs and research. In addition, SIMA actively supports oceanic environmental efforts through its 501(c)(3) charitable environmental foundation, the SIMA Environmental Fund. In the past 19 years, SIMA's Environmental Fund has raised more than $4 million for environmental groups seeking to protect the world's oceans, beaches and waves. The SIMA Humanitarian Fund, also a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, was established in 2006 to award grants to various surf or boardsport related social and humanitarian non-profit organizations whose efforts are focused on improving the quality of life, health and/or welfare of people.
