Discovery Without Boundaries

~ Burnham Institute Gala 2008 ~

“The Burnham would not be complete without the inspiration and generosity of our extended family – our donors and supporters. It is truly an honor to be associated with individuals who are committed to making a difference in the fight against disease.” - President and CEO, Dr. John Reed.

On November 15th, 2008 guests arriving for the Burnham Institute Gala 2008 at the very festive Grand Del Mar Resort were greeted by 'Albert Einstein,' 'Isaac Newton,' Louis Pasture,' and 'Leonardo Da Vinci' for the reception. It was to celebrate 'Discovery without Boundaries.'

And without boundaries of energy and smarts might be a fair description of Burnham's CEO and President John Reed. Known to be up, working out, and in the office before the crack of dawn on a normal work day, John just celebrated his 50th while over in Greece on vacation. Competing in a triathlon no less!

And John's energy was contagious this evening as he was joined by his wife Muffy Walker, and hundreds of black tie dressed guests for an incredible and elegant evening.

Peggy and Peter Preuss were there. And so were Robin and Hank Nordhoff, Sue and Rick Barrett, Judy and Jack White, Pam and Phil Palisoul, Marina and Rafael Pastor, Jane and Tom Fetter, Katy and Michael Dessent, Patty Fuller, Lynn Gorguze and Scott Peters, Renee and Duane Roth, Eric Rimmele, Sally and John Thornton, Peter Teriete, Jan Tuttleman, Carol and Jeffrey Chang, Erna and Andrew Viterbi, Bobbi Warren, Marleigh and Alan Gleicher, Ed Gillenwaters, Ronne Froman and Linden Blue, Noni and Drew Senyei, and Toni and John Bloomberg.

Green was the color of the evening and it wasn't just Toni Bloomberg's necklace. A whole lot of green cash was raised that evening for research to tackle diseases. And it was due in large part to the terrific planning of the event's Co-Chairs, Robin Nordhoff and Sue Raffee Barrett.

Sue not only is celebrating her recent marriage to Rick Barrett, but she somehow found time to design her gown for this evening too.

Others there in notable gowns included Robin Nordhoff in Nina Austin, Valerie Cooper in fringed Lanvin, Nina Doede in Naeem Khan, Jeanne Jones in a new textile detailed design by Zandra Rhodes, and Reena Horowitz in a Badgley Mischka, with London Blue Topaz jewelry of her own design.

After the reception guests entered the ballroom which featured breathtaking 7 foot tall centerpieces designed by Design Essentials. Society Beat provided the 12 piece orchestra.

The live auction by Bill Menish provided some generous dollars for research with $20,000 being a magic number for some big bidding.

A dinner to the French Laundry in Napa Valley via the private jet of Nico and Caroline Nierenberg sold two times for $20,000. Lee and Frank Goldberg bought the trip, and so did Marleigh and Alan Gleicher.

A dinner for 24 at Pamplemousse Grille with Jeffrey Strauss also sold twice for $20,000. John Reed and Muffy Walker were at the lead for one bid, and Alan and Marleigh Gleicher were at the lead for another dinner for 24.

An internship in Dr. John Reed's lab sold twice, at $15,000 each. One internship went to Jan Tuttleman and Craig Lambert, and another to Alberto and Silvana Michan.

For the Fund-a-Need (Direct donations to support post docs), Denny Sanford, and Jeanne and Gary Herberger both donated at the $100,000 level. While Greg Lucier, Brent Jacobs, and Art Brody also generously gave at the $50,000 level.

The evening got a surprise start when John Reed started off on a musical note by singing a rousing rendition of New York, New York.

The evening ended on a great note too with over $1 million raised for Burnham's medical research

Nina Doede summed up the evening well. "Wasn't it a spectacular evening!"

And all for medical research by the Burnham Institute's most brilliant minds.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes.... and a lot of Barbaras!!

Barbara Beltaire invited all of the Barbaras in town to come to her restaurant Barbarella's December 4th and celebrate St. Barbara, the Patron Saint.

Barbara ZoBell was there. And so was Barbara McColl, and the event's founder Barbara Doren.

And they were there for a good cause. All this month (until the 22nd) new shoes, sneakers in particular, are being collected at Barbarella's to give to some very deserving folk at the Monarch School, Father Joe's., and Becky's House ..How great is that!
