Golden Hangers 2008 'Lights, Camera, Fashion!!

“I was actually very surprised at the "huge" turnout for the event.  Because of the economic "downturn" the past few months, I was somewhat "shocked" at the amount of people that were in attendance.  Several attendees told me that it's the fashion "show" of the year and they just couldn't miss it!" - Pat O'Connor

That's Fashion Career College Founder and CEO Pat O'Connor who once again was this year's Golden Hangers' Event Chairperson. Pat was accompanied by her 'lady in pink' friend, and Honorary Chair for the evening, designer Zandra Rhodes. In true supportive fashion, Pat wore a Zandra design. So did Gold Sponsor Pam Slater-Price.

The evening started with a VIP Reception at the Town & Country Resort in Mission Valley on November 8th, 2008. VIP guests gathered as the press snapped away. And the photo taking continued all night.

This is the night that FCC student designers shine, and so do the very cute Make A Wish kids that local celebs got to model with. That's Make A Wish Foundation of San Diego, and Children's Variety Lifeline, the beneficiaries for the event.

A silent auction and larger reception was followed by a lovely supper in the grand ballroom.

The 2008 Golden Hanger Fashion Awards Honorees were Nicki Starr of Civil Disobedience Boutique, Mani M. Nagasubramanian of RD & M India, and Rick Coburn of Factory Vintage.

KUSI's Style Guy and Fashion Guru Leonard Simpson put a lot of fun pizzazz into enticing live auction bids.

Then it was time for the big show. Emcee and KUSI Channel 9's News anchor Sandra Maas was accompanied by Taylor Hay and Emily Muehl. They wore colorful designs by Cherry Choongphon.

~ "I've been participating in the Make-A-Wish Fashion Show for about a dozen years and it's so rewarding to see the children's faces light up as they walk down the runway. They've all been through so much.  The Make-A-Wish Foundation really makes a difference in their lives.  And thanks to Fashion Careers College and people like Pat O'Connor, their dreams will continue to come true." - Sandra Maas

First timer Kerstin Lindquist of KGTV Channel 10 walked with Taylor Masters in designs by Jeanette Ortiz .

Kerstin said these remarks later on. "What can I say about the Golden Hangers?  It was a tremendous event! The room was overflowing with so much talent and heart. The dedication of those graduates to their work and to the children was inspiring.  I had a great time and adored my dress.  What a treat to get a ball gown designed by Prince Charming! It was like a fairy tale."

The Social Diary's Margo Schwab, moi, had the honor of walking with Kyle Underwood and Cody Underwood, two of the cutest guys on the planet! We wore sophisticated rock 'n roll edgy designs by Julie Harding.

Not to be left out, Kima joined us in a Jemima Garcia Dutra (a FCC graduate) leopard design. Kima enjoyed walking with Cody and Kyle!

NBC 7 / 39's Pat Brown strolled the runway with Princella Strickland and Jocilyn Gregory. They wore designs by Kristen Brown. And Prince Charming, a model, dancer and designer, walked with Tyler Brent and Dean Galliano Jr. Their designs were by ..... Prince Charming! Don't you just love that name!

The following designer runway show was hot thanks to the one and only Fashion Show Coordinator Tanya McAnear, and Fashion Show Producer and Choreographer Jim Crawford. Designers matched their design theme to a classic movie excerpt.

The star line up included Carmin Hall Barton, Julianne Harding, Naomi Hill, Alex Garbutt, Monique Dumas, Jamie Hughes, Cherry Choogphon, Tracy Graham, Tomica Pall, Krystin McHatton, Pei-Chun Lai, Nydia Fierro, Jeanette Oriz, Olga Sanchez, Ernesto Flores, and Jesus Estrada.

Jesus Estrada is the one who is already getting a lot of buzz from here to NYC.

And then there was the Fashion Show Finale. A phenomenal replay of an event held at the Timken Museum of Art last August. Titled Tableaux de Mode, the segment showcased fashions inspired from the painting collection at the Timken Museum of Art.

Among the pairing were designs by Mary Louise Birch inspired by Sir Anthony van Dyck - Mary Villiers, Lady Herbert of Shurland, ca. 1636, designer Heather Panetti's and Brooke Mrdjenovich's creations inspired by Benjamin West - Fidelia & Speranaza, 1771, Jennafer Carter's designs inspired by Nicolas de Largilliere - Marguerite de Seve, wife Of Barthelemy - Jean-Claude Pupil, 1729, Nydia Fierro designs inspired by Bartolomeo Veneto- Portrait of a Lady in a Green Dress, 1530, Marisol Goldbaum designs inspired by Nicolaes Maes - Portrait of a Lady, 1677, Kendra Kent designs inspired by John Singleton Copley - Mrs. Thomas Gage, 1771, Jose Maria Ybarra designs inspired by Paolo Caliari (called Veronese) - Madonna & Child with St. Elizabeth, the infant St. John the Baptist and St. Justina, and Ernesto Flores, Jesus Estrada, and Jose Maria Ybarra designs inspired by Francois Boucher - Lovers in a Park, 1758.

Art and fashion inspire life, and little ones too. Make A Wish brothers Kyle and Cody Underwood summed up the evening well. "Fun, Exciting, Entertaining, Exhilarating, Elegance, Magnificent!!!"

Kyle and Cody's mother, Lauren Underwood couldn't have agreed more. "WoW! What an wonderful event to attend and be a part of....  What a special moment to see the Wish kids walk down the runway and be Celebrities for the night."
